Beautiful Rural City In Sri Lanka

Gram On Bike

Travel Date – 10 May 2013

Gram is another cycling enthusiastic went for a cycling tour in Sri Lanka who completed a cycling tour via Walapane area. Here is the summary of his ride. Gram started the cycle tour to Nuwara Eliya from Peradiniya. He started the ride  at 6:00 am and headed to Peradeniya. His root was B364 Peradeniya – Deltota – Rikiligaskada Road. He reached Delthota from B364 and then came to Mathurata in a very rough gravel road.  He described first 50km were stupendous – straight up out of Kandy and didn’t stop up and down into valleys and then back up passes into the next valley for 50 kms. Lots of samosa and chai stops. Great roads, even had bitumen and not too many pot holes. Gram’s road from Delthota to Mathurata was a small “road” not even a B-road, followed was 30 km of the most intense cycling. I’ve done some cycling in mountains before but never so steep as today! the root was so steep, he described he has never done a steep mountain like that ever. At one point he couldn’t wheel on the ground and enough momentum to keep going. But the views and surrounding was beautiful. Later Gram found that road turns out wasn’t really a road but a service track through the tea plantations. Amazing scenery! So hot and so steep

Never before has this happened but Gram had to get off and push the bike! At one point the hairpin bends were so tight a car coming down had to do a 3-point turn to get around the corner. Then finally he reached to Maturata. Straight up the side of the valley it went.

Gram described cycling through the tea plantations is pretty cool. He then stopped by in a small village where whole village came out to see the crazy white man cycling up the hill. From Mathurata made it to the top and then a 20km gentle amble into Nuwara Eliya.
