Geo coordinates for Walapane town is Latitude: 7.095404 and Longitude: 80.861671. Walapane main town situated 1,280 metres above the sea level. Walapane Division covers a large area of central hills about 320 sq. km. Nearest town is Nuwara Eliya about 37 km away, from Kandy 60km and from Colombo 205km. Some highlights include location of Sri Lanka’s second highest waterfall Kurundu Oya Falls, Japanese Peace Pagoda, Randenigala Reservoir and Wildlife, King Ravana Sites, tea plantations and Blue Garunda Marble site. The annual rainfall to Walapane area about 2,500 mm to 3,500 mm. The landslides are common during the monsoon period damage houses, infrastructure as well as interrupting road traffic. The mitigation work started by the Landslide Studies and Services Division (LSSD) of the Sri Lanka Government. The applied structural mitigation measures for mitigating this landslides include trimming and bunching, rock blasting, soil nailing, rock bolting, and construction of surface drainage, and turf.
